Clutch binding
 

Quick question for you car "doctors". The clutch pedal on my '69 BB Pace Car feels like it is binding upon engagement of the clutch. When I engage the clutch, the pedal feels like it comes up, hesitates, comes up, hesitates, etc. - not a smooth engagement at all. I have rebuilt the Z bar & greased the pivot points. When I push the clutch pedal in, it feels smooth. The "jerking" problem only happens when the engine is running.

My plan is to pull the trans next weekend - thinking that the throw out bearing is binding. Any additional thoughts on the source of the problem would be appreciated. Also, might as well replace the clutch & pressure plate while I'm at it. This isn't a race car (stock 396/325) - recommendations for clutch & pressure plate?

Don't forget the Pilot Brg. while swapping clutch parts plus inspect input shaft tip and fit w/ Pilot.
Best check fork condition too also Trans in/out shaft play while all loose on the bench.

As for Clutch/pressure plate recommendations, I really like my Centerforce II pressure plate and disc. Very smooth engagement and great pedal feel. You could also go with a stock parts store replacement, but I think the Centerforce parts are a little higher quality (you do pay for it though). I used an SKF throwout bearing from NAPA (around $30). Much better quality part than what is provided in most clutch kits.

Check the clutch fork for wear on the inside where the throw-out bearing is placed.

If you can compare the fork to a known good one or new gm one, i have seen them bend - esp anything aftermarket

I would use the over the counter clutch and pressure plate set up from oriellys auto or similar....

Lastly - check that pilot bushing - worth just replacing it if u pull the trans - get the bronze bushing.

One more item, if u resurface the flywheel - have them balance the flywheel and clutch set-up all together....

AND make sure the throwout bearing is installed correctly on the fork -- don't capture the throwout bearing flange between the rattle clip and fork. Maybe someone here has a good picture on correct installation. TAZ

I just had my M-21 rebuilt at Jody's Transmission's in Reading PA and here are a few things he told me to check before installing. He also has an article coming out in Car Craft about bell housing alignment.
