Help with identifying a block?

I can figure out just about any number in the Pontiac world but am at a big disadvantage in the Chevrolet world....

Small block Chevrolet with a 606988 casting back on the driver's side bellhousing flange, pad in front of the passenger side head is decked clean.

What is it?

Also where would I find the head casting numbers? Do I need to pull off the valve cover?

Thanks.

Chris

Yes, you need to remove the valve cover to find the casting number and date.

I was reading it backwards and not getting a good look at it - here's a pic, looks like 355909 (305) from I think L 1 of 1978?

If a 305, the pass' side front extended deck surface pad should be the smaller style, not a large one like the earlier blocks?
Also, the 355909 could be a 262 block as well as 305?
:beers:

Here's the pad - blank, don't know if it's small or large.

Pad looks like the large size so probably 75/76?
For sure no stampings under the paint?
:hmmm:
