'67 Chevelle ID
 

Is there any way to tell if my '67 Chevelle Malibu was a L79 or not by the VIN? I was told that it was a 327 car and I know that it was a 4 speed. The body has been stripped and all I have is the shell and the frame. The frame has been stripped and sand blasted, so there is no fuel line or anything left on it. If it's nothing special then I'm going to make a race car out of it.

The L79 had a 12 bolt rear end. On the floor pan there is a clip for the speedo cable if its on the passenger side and a hole in the firewall on same side it had a muncie trans, if the clip is on drivers side it was a Saginaw. The L79 had muncie trany.

The car has a 10 bolt in it now. I don't think it's the original rear end. The frame has the stress crack on the right side behind the lower control arm, which I'm told is from hard use. I'll check for the speedometer cable clip.

Ok, looks like it was a Muncie. Am I right? Are there any other clues to look for?

L79 had 3/8 fuel line and sending unit, 12 bolt car would have had the lower trailing arm mount braces like an SS. please correct me if I am wrong

Bob and DWR have offered acurate and useful clues. Looking at the firewall pix, I see the pass. side cable clip, but no speedo cable hole. On the driver's side I see a cable through what appears to be an original cable grommet, indicating either a Saginaw 4 speed or T16 H/D 3 speed (assuming it is a floor shifted manual trans car).

Having a cable clip on the incorrect side is not unheardof.

My thought is that IF it were an L79 it would have had the H/D three speed, but much more likely to be an L30 Saginaw 4 speed car.

All considered I would say this is not likely an L79 car, and even if it were without docs or any of the original drivetrain there wouldn't be any significant value added. Go ahead and build your race car!

Bill, that was kind of what I was wondering. Even if it were a L79, would it be worth anything in the condition that it is in and without any documentation? So in this condition it's just another rough '67 Chevelle, no matter what it started out as. It was a floor shift, bucket seat, console car.

I had a chance to check the fuel line on this car yesterday and this is what I found. Looks like a single 3/8 line.
