Significant trim tag codes
 

Most of these cars were built before I was born. I can't just look at them and tell if they are right. But I do know that there are certain codes on a trim tag that at least give you an idea of what the car was. What I would like to know is what codes on what trim tags make them a significant car.
I know 4K on the 67 Camaro is a L78. D80 on the 69 Camaro means it is a Z28. What other codes should everybody know?

D80 indicates spoilers on a later production car built at the Norwood, Ohio plant. Many cars with D80 on the tag are Z/28s, but not all.

So now I'm lost. Are you saying you can get spoilers on a non Z28?

Both in 68 and 69. Just regular option. Several L6 cars with them....

William is correct. D80 does not indicate the car would be a Z/28, only that it was factory built with spoilers.

Well I learned something new today.

I know I gave a couple of Camaros as the codes. But I also want to know what makes a 65 Z16? A L88 Corvette. A SD Trans Am? I don't think there's anywhere you can look to find all the trim tag codes for GM high performance cars. How I know if I found a 67 Z28? It's a code on the trim tag.

P - correct code for SS 350
N - 396/325hP
K - 396/375 L78
L - 302 Z28
F - remote mirror

All 65’ Z16’s will show a code 4M and only Z16’s

The codes are all different across divisions and years and even assembly plants.
One of the worst is a 1968 Z28. It pretty much comes down to the tire size sticker in the glove compartment! You really are left to research the particular car you are interested in at the forums for that car and look at any other legitimate (a big if there) docs that the car comes with (Protecto-plate, build sheets, original dealer paperwork, etc). I would hate to try and buy a car these days especially one that has been traded often. try to find one from the original owner or at least one that has been in the owners hands since the 70's. Thse cars were generally pretty common back then and no one was faking them like today.

Also true of all Van Nuys built '69s and '69s built at Norwood through mid-Dec '68. No build configuration info on the tag.
