This Day in History...
August 6th, 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. This was followed by a second atomic bomb 3 days later on the city of Nagasaki. A week later the war was over and the world was at peace.
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/76th-...214000523.html There have been countless news stories and documentaries about these events...while the devastation was horrific, it ended the need for an invasion of mainland Japan. Estimates of over a million casualties and by some measure up to 4 million if we had invaded were avoided. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall It is important we remember and reflect on these important moments in history. To all those who served and sacrificed... -wilma :flag: |
I always remember my father was preparing to fly a B-29 for the invasion of Japan. Who knows what would have happened if the war had not ended.

The US intended to keep dropping atomic bombs. It was actually Russian involvement that expedited the Japanese surrender. I think we were never really committed to an invasion. Well maybe as a last resort if a multitude of H-bombs didn't do it.
Thanks to all who served. The Greatest Generation. |
