1964 Powerglide...air cooled $100 ???
Any interest in this for an early Nova or Chevelle restoration ?? I just got this with a '64 Chevelle SS that had a 230 6 cylinder. I was going to throw it in with the 283 the PO had built to make the car mobile and didn't realize it was air cooled until I picked the basket case up yesterday.

What is a air cooled powerglide ?
|
It has no oil cooler lines or oil cooler. it relies on the holes in the bell housing to cool the transmission and was mainly installed in 6 cylinder GM cars in he early 1960's Bill

Technically this would be referred to as a "Torque Drive". As Bill mentioned, no provision for external cooler and also they were manually shifted eliminating the governor, modulator and several valves from the valve body. During my late 60's dealership days I only saw a couple of these typically in 153 ci four cylinder '69 Nova's. - Bill W

Pictures or it doesn't exist......

If it's a manually shifted "Torque-Drive" trans (I remember them too, had a friend who actually had one in a 4 cyl 69 Nova) it did not originally come in a 6 cyl 64 Chevelle.

Sorry, just saw these replies...I don't get notifications.
It does seem to have a governor and I thought they did shift automatically, but I'm usually wrong. The torque converter is unique also, as it acts a fan and circulates air around it self to help cool the fluid. I'll get pics today, Charley, just for you...:flag: I have a number of pics of the whole mess I intend to put in a thread, but our 4 month summer is here and I'm super busy cramming 6 months of house and yard work into those 4 months. |

Maybe air cooled Powerglide behind a 6 cyl too? :confused2: That was a long time ago! |
It's FOR SALE, Charley, be a conversation piece for your Man Cave...
Polish the case and chrome the converter...:cool2: https://www.yenko.net/forum/cache.ph...2FDSC00196.JPG https://www.yenko.net/forum/cache.ph...2FDSC00197.JPG https://www.yenko.net/forum/cache.ph...2FDSC00198.JPG |
Last PG I sold was to a guy from KS who drove down to pick it up. $100.
He had one of those, with the big holes in it, in the back of his truck. |
