Air Cleaner Lid Upper Side Re-Chroming?

4 Attachment(s)
Hello Guys,

I've been researching if it's possible to have the upper side only re-chromed on air cleaner lids? I recently purchased an original '66 Corvette 427 survivor lid that has a very nice underside AC instruction silk screen that I want to protect.

Does anyone have contact info of platers that will do this job? Any testimonials of work done? I've been told that this process is possible.

Here's the subject lid. Mike

I did have that done on my '70 Chevelle's air cleaner lid, and was able to preserve the silkscreening on the lower surface. This was 30 years ago...I believe Badger Industries in Milwaukee.

If they do it the same way the factory did its Flash Chrome.

Quote:

Flash chrome is similar to hard chrome, in that it is plated in a bath of chromic acid, but the electroplating process is completed rather quickly as the desired thickness is much smaller. Flash chrome plating adds a very thin layer of chromium generally consisting of deposits with a thickness of 0.0002 to 0.0005.

Personally, I would not. Leave it as is and find a nice one. Plenty exist. No vendor will get it close to oem flash chrome. Been there done that numerous times.

Tri-City Plating in TN does flash chrome, You need to tell them you want "Production" chrome or NCRS Chrome & not to polish the pieces. They go nickel, then they will lightly scuff them nickel again & then chrome....No Copper. For reference, the last time I checked, they quoted me $250 ea. to do BB valve covers.

Knowing what little I do about industrial plating, there are coatings (think grease-like substances) that can be applied to mask the area where you do not want the plating to occur. These are then washed off later.

Thank you guys for all of your inputs so far. I'm making note of all of them. So far I've got one solid lead here:

-Badger Industries in Milwaukee

Please keep names coming of plating companies that have done this type of re-chroming for you.

Try Courtesy Metal Polishing in Villa Park Il.https://www.courtesymetalpolishing.com/
I was a regular customer, from 1985 up until around 2015.They were epic in everything I gave them.No idea who is in charge there now,or their quality of work.
The plating world has drastically changed since.
Good luck in your search.
