Thinkware brand is what I have in my daily. It’s easy to install and wire up. I saw a guy cut off a motorcycle rider and ended up giving the video clip to the police officer. She said it was the easiest report she’s had to ever do. No witnesses needed, the camera doesn’t lie.

I second that on the Thinkware. I have one in 3 of my 5 vehicles. I bought my first one some years ago after a friend had one and proved he wasn't at fault by providing the video. After the LEO saw the recording the other driver was cited.

I am in the market for one to. My research has led me to the Viofo with 4K camera with the Sony Starvis 2 lens.

Do you need a smartphone to use all these camaras. There are too many to chose from

Dash-cams will require a micro SD card installed in them. There are options for downloading video either through a smart phone or onto a computer. You can also remove the micro SD card and put that into a laptop to view and save the video.

Your best bet is to find a dash-cam that is 4K as it will be the best to pick up license plate numbers and finer details.
