If the 1st design 414188 with HIGH CROWN was ever reproduced , and the price
was say $100 / set of twenty.....any opinion on how many owners of 69-70 High Quality cars would buy , besides myself ?????? |
I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I express my own undying hatred towards those “capped” lug nuts. My father hated them too & it’s mind-boggling to see what NO$ sets bring. I am a Machinist by trade & I tend to make my own lug nuts when I don’t like current offerings for my rare Magnesium wheels. Anyway, how cool would it be to manufacture a 1-piece stainless steel lug nut that is absolutely identical in every aspect to a capped nut? Those POS capped nuts are so easily damaged and show distortion after just a few R&R’s so matter careful a person is. That would be a total non-issue with a good SS nut.

Would stainless be as strong as steel ? Safe ?
|
ARP has a Stainless 300 material for fasteners. Its tensile & yield is slightly weaker than CM but still higher than a Grade 8 bolt.

GM parts book show that part number 1231722 was switched in July 1974 over to 414188.
That lug nut in the original post looks like it has a rounded head or am I seeing things? |

Call them booby nuts. I wouldn’t want them on my car.
