Big Block Front Coil Spring Decals

When I tore apart the front end of my 1970 Nova 396/350 hp, I found the coil spring decals were still there and were still readable. The code was: HH and the number with it was 3955727. I had new decals custom made for my car. I made 2 extra sets in case I messed some up. I now have them just sitting around and I will post them under the parts for sale but I first wanted to find out what they might fit. Since my car is an early 1970 production car, August 1969, they might also be correct for a 1969 big block Nova. I have no way of checking on this number. I suppose somebody that can decode a build sheet might have the answer as to what it all may fit? I'm guessing it is a very specific number for a big block 1970 Nova and that is it. I will be more than willing to get these to somebody that really needs them. They aren't being reproduced. What I have is it unless somebody else took the time to do the same thing. Re: Big Block Front Coil Spring Decals

RonNova396L34;

3955727 HH will fit a 70 Nova. It was a big PR thing for GM when they stated that they used an EDP (Electronic Data Processing) process to specially select the right spring for your car based on options ordered. Basically they calculated the overall weight distribution (front and rear) for the car with all of the options on it. The total front and rear weight determined the spring code that was printed on the chassis broadcast sheet. There were 27 different front springs for the 70 Nova alone. Quite a few overlapped with the 69 Camaro (as you know).

The parts books give some charts to help figure out what spring to use, but they usually only list 3 or 4 service springs. Other than COPO cars which were at the extreme end of the spectrum and had fairly limited options installed, it is harder to determine what spring was on your car once the tag was gone. A 307 with custom interior and AC might use the same spring as a stripped big block car. It all depended on the total options on a car.

Does this help? Sorry for the long reply, I have tons of time to kill before I head to O'Hare and fly home

Greg,
Very interesting. My car was basically a stripped down version. Steel wheels. Small poverty hubcaps. Non-console floor shift. No power steering, no air, no smog, no side moldings, no rear sway bar . It has bucket seats, carpet, power disc brakes, AM radio, front sway bar.

Ron, new to the site, very informative. I have been following your articles in NNN, your car is coming along nice. I am currently doing a frame off resto on a 70 L78 Nova 4spd, Deluxe Bench interior,orig Eng, orig rear, correct tranny. Fathom Blue, Vinyl Top.My car was lucky enough to have been off the road since 76, tore my subframe down and found the same blue HH spring tags and orig. spiral shocks still there. i was going to have them copied as you did, but may just buy them from you if still have them, let me know Thanks

Yes he did. Got my copy last night and it looks very interesting so far (1st 1/2hr). I cannot comment on the rest until I see it. He also included a sheet with the pertinent part numbers and dates. Very interesting reference material.

Send me your correct e-mail address and I'll send some pictures with the decals on them. [email protected] Yes, I made a video from when I first bought the car and it had 10 years worth of dirt on it. Wasn't driven since 1990. Owner never advertised it. Was 3 block away from me. Nobody knew about it. Shows, these cars are still out there right Rick?
