titlle search canada

i have a vehicle i purchased from montreal. i am trying to find out the previous owner before the owner i bought the car from. in canada they only have registrations. anyone got any idea how i can find out the owner before i purchased the vehicle. the seller is being uncooperative. i simply want to track down the origin of this car to where it was purchased new! its a start.the car originally came from the states. if i can find the owner before the owner i bought it from i can see which state it came from and then move on from there. hopefully they have some dmv records and i can get a copy of the previous title.

I did a "web search" and couldn't find anything specifically relating to Vehicle Registrations. However, you can try one of the following and they can direct you from there, this is the Quebec Ministry of Transportation. Hopefully they will have "English" available for you.

Good luck.

MC....

I assume you know that the car was not delivered new in Canada and therefore it is not on file with GM Vintage services?

If that's the case, you MAY have luck writing to Automobile du Quebec, Case Postale 19 500, Quebec, Quebec, G1K 8J5 stating what you are after. Frankly, you may have more luck finding a "friend" in Quebec who is willing to walk into a Ministry office and make the request for you in French . Good luck,

Not to throw a wet blanket on you....but.... usually a seller is uncooperative about vehicle history for two reasons- either you paid a ton more than what he paid, or there is something in the history that is a little shaky. So I'd follow through. Do the homework in Quebec, and that should get you the last title in the states. Also, don't be afraid to offer these people money for their effort. I've usually had better luck with a search when I open the conversation with "I'm willing to pay you for your trouble" Just pray that the car was titled in a smaller state in the US. I've tried California DMV and they are extremely uncooperative.
