Anyone read the "Starting Line" column in the March issue of Hot Rod? (I got the subscription for free when MCR died). The guy has some great points about bulletin boards and their "clan mentality". I see this happening more and more each day...

Yes, I just read that last night and I agree with Dave Freiburger's sentiment. One of the reasons I joined this forum recently was the professional demeanor of the participants. I'd consider Frieburger's editorial a must-read for all of us. Food for thought, if you will.

Yes, Muscle Car Review was bought out by the company that owns Hot Rod and they replaced my subscription with HR.

Not entirely true.The publisher still owns the name,and does pump out an issue every now & then.The last one I saw was on the newstands in the Fall.It's not as good or frequent as it used to be.Usually recycled articles from the past.

Of course it is clan mentality. Most boards are set to serve the needs of a certain group of individuals, ones with a common interest. Whether it be Chevy supercars, LS-6 Chevelles, Corvettes, Cobras, Shelbys, Pontiacs, whatever. In the same fashion as many of the nation's car shows and even magazines, that are make or model specific. Is this a bad thing? I do not think so, as no one is forced to join a certain group, or read a certain magazine and, the best part, by living in the US of A, anyone can host their own show/board, setting their own rules and agenda, and even limiting who can participate if they so desire.

Frieburger's point was that forums, at least the ones he's on, tend to descend into sniping and back-biting instead of staying on-topic: CARS. Again, I like this forum because we interact with a high level of professionalism and respect for varying opinions and when things begin to get a little "snitty" the moderators stop it cold before things get out of control. (I even got a joke deleted because of a word we all know and love: "__ts." A reminder to me that this is a professionally run forum! Thank you CL.)

Anyway, read Frieburger's editorial (OPINION, by the way) carefully and you'll understand where he's coming from. The Internet is like a car--you feel safer inside and have more courage and thus may say or do something to someone that you would NEVER dare do if you were standing right in front of that person. (Unless you are a really big dude and can kick my _ss.)

I agree with Freiburger . . . The best name I have heard anyone call the internet is "The Electronic Liars Club."
