Some rare Camaros
I have ready about some real odd stuff over the years, and I figured who better to ask then the guys who know every Yenko VIN number off the to of their heads.
A while back I heard of a really rare 70 Camaro. It seems that somebody was saying that they had a line on all or part of a 1970 Camaro that was a pre production vehicle that was given to Smokey Yunick as a test vehicle. It seems that this was the only Camaro that GM ever let off the property with a 454 under the hood{LS6 I think}. Another was about the ZL1 powered 70 Camaro that was built for one of GM's brass.I saw somebody post that they bought the hood off this car from Bill Jenkins or somthing a while back. What happened to the reast of the car?Could it too have been given to Jenkins to use as a race car rather then be destroyed{heck,a clean 70 Camaro body and ZL1 engine dont just get shoved into the shredder all that often}. |
Re: Some rare Camaros
Smokey had 70 camaro pilot car given to him. It was in his backyard until a restoration shop in phoenix bought the car. Vin# was 500001 and had stickers on the tailights inside the trunk that said "handmaid". There was also something about this car in a magazine, when it was bought. Roger

Regarding the Smokey Camaro!
There was an article in a magazine abt. this car, a couple of years ago i think! Maybe Camaro Performers? 1, or 2 page. The car was then just recently found, i think it also had some nice shots of Smokeys "warehouse" of engines! NEW |
Re: Some rare Camaros
I think that Bill Mitchell had a ZL1 powered 1970 Camaro.

Re: Some rare Camaros
When Chevy "scrapped" cars and parts, they didn't always send them to be crushed in a scrap yard. They would send them to what I would call CURO. The Chevy underground racing operation. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
Smokey recieved a bunch of "scrapped" cars and parts. There was a web site where a guy said he bought a parts car from Smokey which he said was 0001 serial number 1970 Camaro. I think he said Smokey had used it as a test car for spoilers or something that Chevy paid Smokey to work on. There was a Bill M. 1970 ZL1 Camaro prototype/show car. Bill M. bought it from Chevy and drove it then later re built it into a car that looked like a prototype 1977 Camaro. There were some magazines artiles on this car. The hood you mention is a hood I bought from Bill Jenkins. It is a 1970 prototype cowl induction all steel hood built by Chevy engineering in 1969. Chevy was going to scrap it but instead gave it to Grumpy for a 1970 show car that Grumpy used as a promotional tool for his 1970 Pro Stock program. |
Re: Some rare Camaros
I got a picture of a 70 zl1 black w/ tach on hood and T tops, written up as prototype owned by some vice president of chevy and shows him leaning on car for photo shoot looks to be taken in 70/71, its in my uncle's hardcover book on history of f bodys, I've never been able to find another copy of his book, its got all kinds of photos of other camaro protypes including el camino type versions, 4 drs, woody sides w/ surf board holders on roof, all kinds of weird stuff...
