70 Pontiac TCS solenoid Question

1 Attachment(s)
This is the connector for the TCS solenoid...it has what looks to be a factory (?) resistor (?) installed ....this is not on the wiring diagram that I am looking at...original solenoid is shot as well as the temp sender...I have NOS pieces but don't want to ruin them...whats the deal with the resistor ?

Not, sure my 70 RAIV cars don't have that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: 70 Pontiac TCS solenoid Question

I have never seen that Radio Shack component on any of the GTO's I have restored. If it ain't on the wiring diagram, it shouldn't be there, IMHO. I've seen plenty of resistors in line with such items as oil pressure sending units and temp senders , to artificially fix low oil pressure or a hot running car, old car hustlers trick. Along with putting in really long rocker arms on one cylinder to make a car have a miss but loose the rod knock. Of course, you then get the "I just washed the engine and it started missing. I bet if you dry out the cap she'll be fine" routine. Can't figure out the benifit of a resistor in the TCS plug, however, there is not even a warning light to turn off!

This has been Wholesale Car Auction 101. No homework today.

Re: 70 Pontiac TCS solenoid Question

Very strange ...it looks like they actually took the terminals out of the connector and put this thing in...the wiring diagram in the manual shows an auto. trans car with 2 wires on the transmission swith...4spd is a single terminal...the trans switch makes ground when shifted into 4th gear which is when full vacuum advance is used...this piece can't be a jumper to give full advance capability either...it was covered with what looked like black duct tape....before I cut the damn thing out of the system...anybody show anything different on a manual trans ???

Re: 70 Pontiac TCS solenoid Question

Hang on...the temp sending unit is N/O until engine reaches operating temp...it then closes and allows power to the TCS solenoid which closes to STOP vacuum advance in any gear except 4th....the trans switch must OPEN ground in 4th gear to de activate solenoid and allow full advance...there would be no way to jump out this operation at the solenoid unless you connected directly to ground and eliminated the trans switch...could this piece be used to bleed off some voltage to extend the life of this solenoid which is powered a majority of the time the car is running ??? I need to see a manual trans diagram...can you tell I'm bored ? This install looks factory ..it is crimped into the factory terminals...

Re: 70 Pontiac TCS solenoid Question

Is the car an early car maybe sending units were not calibrated right and that was a recall until they corrected the problem.
