Re: Chevy TH400 Transmission #s question
I've seen the VIN# stamped into the TH400 on the Driver side into a 3 inch recessed machined Horizontal pad above the Pan gasket, just behind the shift linkage bracket & boot.
Or also look up around the Driver side Bellhousing mating area too. |

Mark,EXACTLY what I meant.Good Picture! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
That is a perfect example of a Replacement Transmission Code, similar to a CE Engine block code. H9T 05030 breaks down as: H=Hyra-Matic 9=model year,1969 T=Transmission 05030=Unit Sequence number produced. The Cleveland plant started producing at 00001 and went up to 14999,so we know it was from the Cleveland Plant. What does the passenger side Aluminum Rectangular tag show? Rick |

There isn't a tag on the passenger side. If you look in the hole where the tag rivit should go, it looks like there never was one on it. The story I got from the owner at the time was, the drive shaft got thrown out in 1970 and it wrecked the original tranny. thanks for the info! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif m

Re: Chevy TH400 Transmission #s question
That's Typical of what I have seen & heard of Service replacement Transmissions.
There were 4 Transmission plants making these, and for the following Car Manufacturers: Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Chevrolet-Cadillac.They didn't use a Pass. side suffix tag, because they didn't know what application that trans. would be used for. Your findings help back that up. I Thank You. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Rick |
