1969 chevelle ss 4spd with 427

Hi everyone,

I am going to look at a 69 chevelle ss 4spd car tonite. It is advertised with 427 motor. I know it is a long shot and most likely a later conversion but what should i look for on car and paperwork for copo. Also what codes verify a real ss 396 car? What would value be for a real 393 car with a later 427 swap. thanks phil

As far as being a SS. I do not belive that after 68 there was a different vin (138) than the plain cars.
If the build sheet is there check for L-78 deleted for copo
9562 Also check for the 9737 Sports car conversion.
Also make sure if claimed to be a copo that there are no SS badges on the dash or door panels and check for KQ rear. If equiped with fact. guages should be a 6000 redline.

You're right, there's nothing on the body tag or VIN that will confirm a '69 Chevelle's SS status, unless it happens to be an SS only color of 72 Monaco Orange or 76 Daytona Yellow. Look for power disc brakes in front, as they were included with SS. Also, look for 12 bolt rear, big block radiator, filled in Malibu quarter emblem holes, stuff like that. These aren't iron clad signs of a true SS by any means, but it's a good place to start. Good luck, hope you've found yourself something cool.

Also relay to us here the:
*Vin#
*Entire Trim Tag stampings
*Engine Tonawanda code & dates
*Trans suffix & date
*Rearend suffix & date
Some of these were unique to the car they were assembled on,if they are indeed Original to this car.

Also,, one of the best ways to spot a 69 SS clone car,, is look inside the rear tail panel,, if the holes that hold the SS only bottom and top moldings on are drilled "round" and not stamped "oval" one of 2 things is for sure,,, its an SS with a replaced tail panel or a clone,,
