Yenko Hood Tachometer

Does anyone know if any of these new electronic spark controls that fit under our existing distributor caps will still allow the Dixco hood tachometer to function properly. I understand from a friend that the tachometer won't function properly unless the standard mechanical points are in place. Any thoughts?
Many thanks, Alan

Good question, and one I'd be interested in knowing the answer to myself... My Deuce has points, but my Camaro has the "Pertronix" unit you describe, and I have never been able to get a SW 970 tach to do a darn thing in it... I have always blamed it on the tach itself, as I have tried several 990B monitors without luck... never thought about it, but maybe the problem is the ignition system, not the tach... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

PS.. i just made this post because i wanted to use that new graemlin. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Joe,
That graemlin is pretty cool. He looks like I feel about so many questions. Thanks for posting, maybe somebody will take a look and give us an answer. Anyway, perhaps what I heard is true about the module units. That could be the answer to your tachometer problems. Let's see what somone can come up with.

While not *exactly* the same...

I have an MSD manual that mentions work arounds with different tachs and monitors...let me dig it up, and maybe it will lead us in the right direction...

<font color="blue">MSD sells a tach adapter which should straighten out the signal.
Call the tech dept, they 'may' be some help. </font>

That sounds like it is certainly worth a try. Is everyone else still running on regular points or am I trying to be too "high tech" about this? I just remember so many times with the thickness guage and dwell meter and of course the old emery board to re-juvenate the points contacts. I have owned this car since it was new so I have been under the hood more times than I can count. But, it sure is less imtimidating than opening the hood on a new car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Personally, I'd leave the points in it if you haven't already bought the electronic ignition module... I'm sure Rob could point out the pros/cons as to how many 10ths its worth to install the Pertronix, but personally, I haven't noticed any difference from a good ol' set of points. I originally installed it on my Camaro when i was battling an ignition problem that was later traced to a bad reproduction delco plug wire, otherwise it would still have the stock points in it. My Deuce still has points, and I have no plans to "upgrade". PS.. my hood tach works too! (thanks to Joe Swezey!) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Actually, I'm not a fan of Pertronix...and according to some of my fellow Pure Stock racers, a good set of points (I've had good luck with Accell) will out power the Pertronix on the dyno! In fact, I believe it was Casey that said "Pertronix is the devil!"

Anyway, if you're still looking to do away with your points for good, and do it correctly, then I'd pursue *other* avenues... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif
