427 Rebuild

I'm about ready to start rebuilding the 427 I just got. The high compression thread got me thinking about what compression I want to run. What compression can I safely run and still use 93 octane gas? I was thinking around 9.8 or 10 to 1. What pistons do you recommend? It is a .060 bored block with 840 heads. I haven't decided on what can to use yet. Don't know if I want a solid or hydrolic lift cam. Any recomendations there? I drive the car 3000 miles or more a year. I am thinking about driving it in the Power Tour next year.

Re: 427 Rebuild

I used the TRW 2300 small dome forged pistons with my .030 over 427 with 840 heads (hardened exhaust seats.) I used a fairly radical hydraulic cam for the "rump" at idle. I used hydraulic cam, because I'm too lazy to periodically reset lash. (with an A/C car, you have to remove the upper compressor bracket to get the driver valve cover off...passenger side is no picnic, either.)

Theoretical compression is 9.73, but dynamic is somewhat less. I have no problems with 93 octane pump gas.

Re: 427 Rebuild

As long as you can keep the hot spots to a minimum on the piston crown (coat with one of the new coatings) and get a good quench area between the piston crown and the cyclinder head so as to get good movement of the intake charge you should not have to worry about preignition (colliding flame fronts) even with 11 to 1.

Re: 427 Rebuild

No markings to tell which vehicle had them originally. The 074's could be from an L-88, ZL-1, or if I am not mistaken and L-89 Vette, Camaro, or Chevelle. The dates are in range to be any one of the above...
Oh and Please turn off Caps lock, we don't like yelling around here.

Re: 427 Rebuild

Jeff,
Listen to this 60 over 396 bigblock it has a 750" lift solid roller cam. It is a little on the ridiculous side for a street car especially since it has 13 to 1 compression, and a jetted out 850 double pumper. 69 Nova running

Re: 427 Rebuild

The L-89's all had closed chamber and L-88 vetts had closed chamber till around serial # 21,000-22,000 of the 69 model year. Then they went to the open design.

Hello All,
I have a .030 427 990 Rec heads, ZL1 intake 198 .500 TRW dome pistons set .010 in the hole and Run a custom ground Hyd Flat tappet cam. Ran 12.50's @ 110 on 255.65 15 BF goodrich radial street tires not the stickeys! I would go with a Hyd flat tappet. 427 will run strong either way! I use Sunoco ultra 94 and have no problems! It's a true 11.2 comp also! Good luck! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
