69 621 Bellhousing Correct Finish
 

Is the bellhousing suppose to be painted or natural? I've heard alot of different opinions. Carl

With my limited knowledge I believe that the bellhousing was bolted to the engine when the engine was painted. It received overspray but wasn't completely painted.

For whats its worth, when my 68 Z28 was judged for Diamond, they deducted some points because there was no overspray on the bell housing.

I honestly do not know small blocks but my understanding was that Tonawanda big blocks had many items installed when the engine was painted such as bellhousing, valve covers, exhaust manifolds, etc whereas the small block plants did not practice this. I went through the Diamond judging and my bellhousing was painted orange and they accepted it. I think that they will accept it natural with overspray also

SB's were oversprayed as well, some a little, some a lot, but rarely (if ever) was the entire bell painted orange.

I recently purchased a '621 bell housing that was originally
attached to its matching L/71 ( never separated ). This bell
housing has a heavy overspray around the entire perimeter
of the mounting surface, with the exception of the clutch
fork area. This area was left alone. It even has the
original yellow pencil inspection mark.

I bought it mainly because it was as originally painted and
time has changed overspray if you get my meaning. I always
try to purchase originally painted componentry what I can,
as long as I have a reasonable expectation that they are
indeed original.

What sort of yellow inspection mark was on the bellhousing? I have seen this on rare occassion.
