1971 Firebird Formula

If a 1971 Formula originally came equipped with a 455 would that motor have been a 455HO or did Pontiac offer a standard 455 and the HO as an optional engine?
How much would such a car be worth in very good condition?

There was a standard 455 4 bbl motor in addition to the 455HO. You need to look on the front of the block for the engine code. Before you buy anything Pontiac always pay the $40 and get the PHS documents from Pontiac. They will tell you exactly what the car was originally.

The seller has the PHS paperwork; I just wasn't sure if the car would have been a 455 HO by virtue of having the 455 or if the HO was a seperate option.

Thanks

Ram air HO M22 would be worth the most, buyers market unless it's an SD Formula.71's are cool as they are the only year Formula with NACA ducted fenders.

Both the 455 4bar and the 455HO was available in the 71 Formula. You could not get a manual trans in the 455 4bar(auto only). How ever you could get a manual and auto trans for the 455HO.Either way its a very rare car.

You didn't ask this, but Ram Air was optional on the HO. For 1972, it was standard, and the base 455 took a break till '73.

It's a pretty nice looking car although it's not the original color; it's been painted black and the end caps on the rear spoiler are from a 1979 and up car.
The car is an automatic and the seller is asking $18,500.

If it's this one it was originally 53 Quezal gold metallic/saddle int..delivered to Bob Longpre in Westminster CA.I was considering the car a few months back..the RA hood was obviously added along with the D80

That's the car; what makes the RA hood an obvious add on?

Figured you had the PHS docs and already knew that.I think they made less than 200 71 RA H.O.Formula's. Nice driver though, and still has the original blue base plates.
