Which Big Block is Original
OK, how in the world can you tell what motor originally came in a 1968 Nova. I decoded both the Data Plate and VIN tag and both simply tell me it's a V-8 car. How do I know if the motor in the car now (which is supposeably a 427) is original? Just judging by appearances it looks very original, but overall the car is rough and before I lay down my hard earned money and begining restoring it I want to make sure the car is worthy.

Re: Which Big Block is Original
The largest displacement you could get from the factory in a 68 Nova SS was the 396/375 HP motor. You can not tell from the Vin or trim tag which motor the car received. It will only tell you if it is a V8 or 6 cylinder. There was at least one Supercar dealer that installed 427's in 68 Novas. The Vin #'s of those cars are known and are listed on this site.
Do you have any photos of the car that you could post. Mike |
Re: Which Big Block is Original
If the original engine is gone, you will need to confirm via paperwork or circumstantially via a list of items signifying a particular engine - L78, L34 or SB.

Re: Which Big Block is Original
Nickey Chevrolet/Chicago converted many Novas to 427s and 454s.
