BALDWIN-MOTION ZL-1
 

I was doing some reading on Camaro Research Group about the ZL-1's since there is another hot topic on here concerning ZL-1 #66, and came across this:

For a car with a total production run of only 69, the enthusiast magazines of the era took notice. Super Stock was the first, featuring the #1 car in full AHRA trim, and another of Gibb's, believed to be #5, in the May 1969 issue. The street version ran an incredible 11.64/122 mph with open headers and small 6-1/2 inch slicks. The #1 car ran 10.29/132 mph. Popular Hot Rodding covered the same test in the July 1969 issue. Hot Rod reviewed this test in the July 1998 issue. Hi-Performance Cars August 1969 tested the now-famous #3 ZL-1 and ran 13.16/110 mph on E70x15 tires with closed exhaust and an AIR pump. Drag Racing magazine had Baldwin-Motion build them one and it ran 11.48/122 mph.

Does anyone know what number ZL-1 car Motion built for did the they just do a engine swap putting a ZL-1 into a SS396 Camaro, this would be a very interesting car is could be found! Any pics of this car from Drag Racing magazine? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

I wrote the article on the CRG site.

The car in question was featured in a number of the NY 'pulp' car mags back then. It was a black L78 '69 Camaro SS and getting it wasn't easy. They wanted black with no D90 stripe; Chevy wouldn't do it. They accepted the car with white stripes. It was featured in a number of Motion ads of the era; they eventually took the stripes off and photos of it both ways are common. It had black vinyl roof, VE3 bumper, TH400, console, AM radio, power steering and windows. Grille was silver. They put a Motion hood, Inglewood white stripe tires and Keystone mags on it. The Drag Racing [May '69] article was the ZL1 transplant; it had an L88 at one time.

All short lived. It was stolen and never recovered.

I think I recall seeing that car in some of the magazines. For some reason I think that it belonged to one of the writers or Editors of one of those magazines. I also remember the owner recalling his ownership of the car and said that it had been stolen.

The car you're talkin about was bought new by Joe Oldham. He wrote a couple editorials on the car before and after it was stolen in CARS magazine. I got pics at home I'll post later.

Thanks, I remembering seeing the other thread with the article in it but did not relize that Motion had ever done a ZL1 transplant.
