Battery toppers

How many of you use and are satisifed with battery toppers as a product. I am considering getting some R59s for my pontiacs and I can't find one for my R89 side terminal battery on my 70Z28.

all thoughts are appreciated.

John:

The battery toppers do the job just fine and actually look very good. Did you know that they are produced by Legendary Motor Cars in Canada. It's one of their little side lines.

The battery toppers are much less expensive than constant replacement of repro lead acid batteries. That's why I jumped on the bandwagon. I have seen them for Delco tar tops but never for a side terminal battery.

Good luck and post if you find one.

I use them on 3 different cars. They work great. All top post though.

Re: Battery toppers

I have one over my modern delco. Looks great from the top, but the sides are still "modern" Also, mine is not a tight fit. Some guys use velcro to keep it from sliding around, but I think I'll just glue some fillers on the underside to secure it.

Someone said the new repop from New Castle, I think, have a modern Optima sealed inside the repop case. If true, that would look more accurate from any angle.

Re: Battery toppers

Ok, so i talked to the guy in Iowa with the toppers. They do not have one for the R89 side post, but have been trying to get that done.
He made the point, and its a good one, that a good chunk of 70Zs depending on build date, would have come with a top post battery. So I guess I will go that route, a modern delco with a topper and keep my side post for any serious or judged shows. I also am going to convert my other pontiacs to Delcos and toppers (R59s). Although my collection is all hooked up to a ten bank battery tender, the repops just don;t do it. So I will do the same thing, save my acid R59s for showing and judging and do the toppers for my personal use.
I just put in the correct starter for my 69 TA and I still don;t have enough crank on hot starting to turn the starter strongly enough with my repop R59. I hope this solves some of my problems. It is extremely important for me to pick a ride and rip it whenever i get the itch.

Thanks,

Hi John,
Do you have a link to the toppers that shows what they look like and cost? If so please post.

My understanding is that they are still produced by Captain Carl in Iowa. Legendary Motor Car is not involved with this product.
