Couple of things that struck me about that terrific video. The reference to the "Chevelle three-nine-six" vs. three-ninety-six. Does anyone else recall it being referred to that way on the "street" back in the day https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif ? The use of the shoulder belts by the occupants. And finally, how did they do those fantastic visual effects https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif !

Great video. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Sam,

That's the first time I ever heard it referred to as the
"three-nine-six". It would need to have gotten past the
GM exec's before airing, so it must be accurate. Strange!

Good catch on the shoulder belt use. Love to know the
point of that in the ad.

With insurance companies bearing down on the manufactureres of muscle cars, GM undoubtedly wanted to promote safety by showing the availability and use of then-modern safety equipment such as the shoulder belts. Strictly a promotional consideration by GM corporate leadership. "See, we're responsible."

As for going back in time, if we could there would be tens of thousands of '69 L89/M22/4:10 Posi SS Chevelles out there (and thousands of Motions, Nickeys, Bergers, Harrells, Yenkos) and they'd all be as common as belly buttons. I would have five, no, ten of each myself! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Excellent commercial. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif
Each year that GM added more horsepower, they also bumped up their safety campaign. In 1970 they released a promotional film & packet based soley on this.
One clip even shows an LS-6 Chevelle with a child safety seat inside.
The color of the youtube video is pretty faded.
I have the 16mm of it showing more vivid color & clarity.
I found it interesting when they say four 396's available,(L-35 325HP,L-34 350HP,L-78 375HP,L-89 375HP),while most other Chevrolet references consider the L-89 the same as the L-78,as it was the same horsepower.
Aluminum heads were a possible L-78 option, not a different engine.

All '69 cars had the shoulder belts, just not the optional second seat belt receptical. First you had to put on your lap belt, then the shoulder harness. The deluxe center console had 4 slots, but the standard only had 2.
The hassle was what to do with the shoulder harness when leaving the car. My moms '69 Cutlass, which I drove every chance I could, required buckling and adjusting both belts.
The shoulder harness required the space of your fist between the belt and your chest. Too tight would limit your movement in the seat.
The shoulder belts in my Camaro look as if they have never been off their clips. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif
Good thing GM had colapsible steering columns. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif
I think '72 was the first year that shoulder and lap belts were combined into one unit.

Andy,

Further clarification please. My 69 SS Camaro has shoulder
belts and the associated "receptacles". However, I have a
standard interior. Did I miss something in your explanation? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
