part numbers/casting numbers for 1968 L36

Wondering if anyone can help with correct part numbers for some things I am looking for.
Looking for correct starter, alternator, & non smog exhaust manifolds part numbers so I can scour evilbay for items I need for my 427 Biscayne resto. My engine build date is Dec 23 67 if dates make a difference in part number used..
Thanks,
Mark

Re: part numbers/casting numbers for 1968 L36

If your car has a manual transmission, the RH ex manifold was #3918862. LH was #3989310.
Auto trans RH #3914613. LH #3919862
There are a lot of alternators listed. You need to know what amperage yours was.
Starter number looks like 1107365.
Others here may have better info than this. This info is from a GM full sized Chev parts book, #761, dated 1976.
The numbers given are listed as superceded numbers, so should be original.

Hi John
Its a manual transmission.
Curious as to why the different numbers for exhaust manifolds based on transmission?
Also, my car would have just had the base alt, 37 amp probably. car had no power options at all.
Thanks for the input..Mark

Base alt. for yours was 42 amps.
42 Amp for a manual trans was #1100815
42 amp with TH trans was #1100795
service part # for both is 1100842

Mark, those numbers look to be supercessions of the original numbers. Colvins Chevrolet by the Numbers doesnt show the 3918862 at all and shows the 3989310 started in 1971. Of course there's always the possibility of misprints or Canadian production being different. I think you need to check it out a little more.

Most likely you will find you need 3916178 passenger side and 3914613 drivers side, but it pays to check further before spending the big bucks.

Re: part numbers/casting numbers for 1968 L36

John, I posted the date and number of the parts book in case someone had previous information that was better than mine. I saved a lot of the parts books from when I was in GM parts, but didn't have the foresight to save a 'change-up' book which would have given original numbers.
The numbers that I gave seemed to be correct in that the new numbers had a note stating that pipe thread plugs needed to be put into them to make them right for 68.
I'll bow to your info.
John

I think that you will find that a superceding part number is a part from another application that will do the job but may not be correct. GM did a lot of that over the years to cut down on the parts warehouse inventories.

I agree. I didn't post the superceding numbers.

I ordered a 442 front emblem for my 68 442 in the mid 80's, and actually got a '4' that was correct for a 67 Corvette hood. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif Someone thought that would work. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

According to the parts book, a 37 amp was for a 6 cyl. car. Base amp for a V8 was 42.
