Safest Rust Remover -Caution with painted parts
 

I just wanted to post a note to use a little caution with the Safest Rust Remover on painted parts. I started using it on a few parts and it lifted the original paint on my trans crossmember and also the paint on my free made-in-china parts cleaner/degreaser tub. I had the crossmember in a sheet plastic "bowl" in the tub to clean the trans mount area with about a quart of liquid. It needed to soak overnight and a I noticed it starting to lift later the next day along with some liquid weeping through the plastic and into the tub. Otherwise the stuff works great, smells great and I'll taste it later https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif.

I wanted to pump it through my parts washer later on other parts but now I'll have to think of something better.

It is a nice product. I was surprised and impressed the first time I used it.

I havent used it on a painted part, but it will also remove platings (maybe just some) and ink stampings.

I've only started using it recently, and it worked well on rusty speedo faces. Keep in mind that oftentimes its rust that separates the paint from metal. So when this product dissolves the rust underneath the paint, it appears as if the product has lifted the paint. This is exactly what happened on the speedos I soaked.

If you let a painted part soak over a few days it will soften paint but most of the time the paint lifting is due to the underlying metal have corrosion issues whether visible to the naked eye or not. The paint softening happened with the rusty bumper jack base I soaked in it for 3 days. I use a plastic tupperware tub to hold the liquid. I have been using the same 5 gallons now for about 9 months. It's a funky brown color but still works well on rusty parts.

It must be that high-quality, lead-based, Chinese paint they supply to Mattel. They probably use rust as a major component when they run low on lead. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Steve, I believe that not all the rust is disolved at the same time. Maybe the bond is disolved and hunks float off and sit in the bottom of the tub. Now, the stuff keeps working on that sediment and shortens it's life. I put one of those cotton face respirators in a funnel and poured the stuff through to filter out the sediment. I think that makes it last longer. Also, when you're done filtering, the face mask can be rinsed out with water to be used again.

This was mainly a 90% clean piece so that much paint lifting was due to letting it soak for a fairly long time to clean the pad. Yes, filter after use.
