074 Heads
I have a nice set of 3946074 heads dated 11/30/73. So I guess that makes them parts counter items ?
Was curious to what these are going for should I want to sell them or list them on Ebay ? There is what looks to be a repair to plug a hole. Look at the picture below, there is a small stud or bolt ground flush, with a washer around it,and there is some silicon around the washer, any ideas why there was a hole here ?. On both heads in the same place. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...40Heads003.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...40Heads002.jpg Also both heads stamped "EVERHART" on the ends. Is this just someones way of ID'ing the heads ? Or was this a race team ? http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...40Heads005.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...40Heads004.jpg The stud holes for what I understand to be for a ZL1 application have been pluged. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...40Heads006.jpg Thanks for any insight, Mike https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ouguysrock.gif |

any ideas why there was a hole here [/ QUOTE ] Those are the equivalent to turkey poppers that stick out when the turkey reaches temperature . They are put on by rebuilders so when you bring them in they can tell if the heads were over heated,if you try to remove them the warranty is void. |

What's the vintage of these poppers? I've never seen or heard of them being used before. As a matter of fact, of the billions-and-billions of BBC aluminum heads I've seen on the bay, these are the first I've ever seen. What else can you tell me about their use and how effective they really were? What was the timeframe such a device would have been used? Inquiring minds want to know..... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Steve |
Re: 074 Heads
They are used by some rebuilders. If you come back with the heads/ motor and they were tampered with, removed, or "popped out" due to overheating the shop wont stand behind them. Thats basically what thier function is.

Re: 074 Heads
427 King, thanks, https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif never heard of such a thing. Sure would like to see one B4 installation.
Are these guys worth anything with the 1973 dates ?? Mike |
Re: 074 Heads
Actually Mike, I have a somewhat associated question.
We all know that these heads are all over ePay because of their ZL-1 & L-88 heritige. However, I have read numerous books about building hot rat motors from back in the day and all of them pretty much trashed these heads for their round exhaust port configurations and lack of power unless you ran open headers and super combustion.... How accurate is this? If true, what explains the crazy prices for '074 heads and why aren't the '077 heads worth a boat-load more? Nuch |

The same reason a vintage ZL1 is worth 3 times a yenko ZL1 or a new GM zl1. |
Re: 074 Heads
Chuck,
Where a real ZL-1 or L-88 ( one of the 2 - 4 ) are concerned, I totally agree. However, there are tons of these heads available from parts counter sales back in the day and all the remaining ZL-1 wanna-be cars really shouldn't care about the '074 heads as long as they are aluminum. So I'm still wondering why the '074 heads are worth so much? Nuch |

So I'm still wondering why the '074 heads are worth so much? [/ QUOTE ] All 4 casting numbers[392,842,074,077]had thier own external appearances. Why are 67 heads going for tons of money when only 20 L88s were made?? People want cars vintage correct, and appearance correct over performance . |
