I am amazed at the asking prices of musclecars that do not have one piece of factory documentation to prove what they are.

with the easily obtainable and recently manufactured pop's
dealer warranty brochures, new car check sheets.....
owner history and valid certification become a very useful tool in authentication of a cars true birth / origin. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

there are many cars without a huge stack of factory paperwork that have significant value and are really not lessened in my eyes because they lack the "perfect storm" of acceptable paperwork. jmo

Doesn't Ed's certificate sort of negate the need for the perfect storm of paperwork in this case? I don't see the question regarding the authenticity of this one....or am I reading LS6 Rat's post incorrectly?

X11 71 71,

This cars starting price is 189K, and I imagine his reserve is close to 200K. That certainly is a substantial amount of money to pay for a car without docs to prove its provenance. I agree that previous ownership is certainly a valid form for tracking a cars history. And yes there is a fair amount of fraudalent paperwork available. For the most part it is not terribly difficult to distinguish it from authentic pieces.

Re: 1969 COPO Camaro

Racefan,

I didn't consider Ed's certificate to be "the last word" for substantiation as a factory COPO Camaro. I think Ed's efforts to confirm a Camaro as a possible COPO built car is commendable, but it is his opinion, and not backed up by any piece of factory produced paperwork that leaves no doubt at all. I certainly think the seller of this Camaro deserves his asking price, provided the car has factory proof of being built as a L72 COP0. Someone who buys a high dollar musclecar without absolute proof from the factory as to its origins is taking quite a gamble in my opinion and risks the chance that down the road, proving this car to be the genuine article would be suspect without authentic factory backed docs.

Re: 1969 COPO Camaro

i guess that some of us green, newbie, etc. people have trouble distinguishing factory documents that have been created so to speak. i still believe that speaking to an original owner has got to carry considerable weight , when you are checking out a car.... and last time i checked that wasn't considered a factory document.

regarding ed c., in my opinion he has provided a lot of information and service to the hobby, people are imperfect, in fact cars and documentation are sometimes less than perfect as well.

i think the hobby at times gets too hung up on the perfect factory documentation https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif last time i checked the cars could be fun to actually use and drive. we have to be careful in what direction our hobby goes. jmo

I've personally seen the car. A good & generally correct restoration.
If you are a serious buyers I believe he will work with you a little on the sale price.

That car was bought from what i believe was the original owner from wisconsin. And dale chevrolet did sell several copo's and a zl-1. So i would not have a problem with this copo. It would be in my garage if i had the spare change.
