modified M22, Motion? Questions
 

I was offered a complete M22 setup from a friend at a fair price. He said the transmission came out of a Motion Camaro. It is odd, painted red,white and blue with a metal B M tag on the case. He said it was built by B&M transmissions and the synchros were modified to shift without a clutch. Is there any way I can tell if it's from a BM car? Were their transmissions modified or was this possibly done by B&M trans? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I would like to put this behind a mild 454 in my 72 Nova SS. Thanks!!!

Transmissions modified to shift without using the clutch usually dont shift well using the clutch. They usually have no sychronizer rings and are meant to only be shifted at maximum rpm (with a slight lift of the gas pedal so you can pull the shifter) using all your strength to jam the trans into the next gear. If you normally drive like that, you might want that transmission. Can new syncros be installed and it will be normal again? Well, as normal as an M22 gets. Sounds like it may be cheap.

I know it did shift fine when he had it in his car. He said every other tooth on the synchros was machined off. Includes trans, 2pc steel bell, new in line hurst shifter, 454 flywheel, centerforce clutch/press plate used 1 summer.

We used to call those - crash boxes - they made for an interesting street trans. They were fine if you didn't mind powershifting every gear!

The only way to tell if the trans is "street friendly" is to pull the side cover and see if all the gears still have sychronizer teeth and the brass blocker rings. If only half of the sychro teeth are missing on the gears and the brass rings still have their teeth, it can still be shifted normally. If there are big block style teeth visible on the gears where the little sychro teeth normally are, it's a "race only" tranny. Still might be valuable enough to put a new gear set in though.
