Darrell, I think the A, B, C or D represent the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th job done with that particular "229" special paint color. 229 would be the batch, not a code for the paint.

I think that red one was owned by a guy named Chad and it looked like it was originally British Racing Green or something similar. Not to be confused with British Green which was a darker green '68...
