I have run these with factory ecu and harnesses in older setups as well as going carb'd and using a stand alone system to run the timing. All you really need to run a carb is a crank sensor & a cam sensor & a stand alone to fire the coils. As for applications, these are found in several GM vehicles over the years. Trucks, Camaro, Vette, Firebird & GTO. There were some fwd cars that got an aluminum 5.3L but it was only for a few years and not many were made. Now that the 6.2 has become more popular and common it is quickly becoming the engine of choice. I cant remember 100% but I think the FWD LS engines are the same but that would require more searching to know for certain.
