I've never seen any putty on any of the hood lip molding studs.

Note that the NOS hood lip molding you have is different than the factory installed versions, in two areas;

1. The studs are self threaded whereas the assy line versions were machine thread.

2. There are 2 studs missing in the NOS versions, closest to the center emblem - you can see the holes for them in the earlier pic. The assy line versions would have 2 additional studs compared to the NOS one in this pic.

You can still find early NOS hood lip moldings with all studs in machine thread, but they are difficult to find. The other option is to remove the self threading studs on the later NOS versions and replace the studs with a machine threaded stud, then add two more while it's apart...
