Probably wanted the column shift to go along with that sexy bench seat.
I don't know if the Chevy guys were on to this but what the Pontiac guys would do (before the proliferation of Hurst floor shifters and four speeds) was change the rear axle ratio such that they could launch in 2nd gear; that way they only had to make one shift (the 2-3 shift straight down).
