Volt was introduced as a 2011 Model year vehicle.
You might note on the concept car the roof and door beltline were transparent. For production those were emulated by painting those portions gloss black regardless of the vehicle exterior primary color.
The only problem was: Detroit Hamtramck did not have the ability to paint two-toned vehicles. So every Volt (as opposed to Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS, which were built alongside the Volt) had to be run back through the paint repair process to have the second color added.
That proved to be pretty inefficient so the black roof and beavertail were eliminated for 2012 model year and beyond as a cost savings.
