Maybe you are just referring to Muscle Cars, but these wild colors really started back in the mid 50's with the Ford Vic's, Tri Five Chevys and even Chrysler got into the act.
From a Muscle Car standpoint I guess it started in 1969. Maybe somebody has an idea of an earlier time.
