Start calling around to some windshield glass places and tell them that you are doing it out of pocket. The price for glass can be considerably cheaper.
As for your windshield, how many of you know that it is vital to have your windshield intact and free of cracks for your airbags to work correctly? Everyday, one of the checks in the plant is to insure that enough paint film is in the windshild flange!!!!
The reason why... so that the paint film is strong enough for the adhesive to grip and not have the windshield blow out... the windshield is the backboard for the airbags. No windshield- no airbags!!!!
