Don Yenko was a pilot so maybe he liked to have the radio to communicate with the pits.

Gulf Oil Research had some smart engineers on staff. They were using an all mechanical on board diagnostic system that recorded time, rpm, and mph and linked it to the position on the track. It plotted the info on a circular graph inside the car. That was in 1963
