Top Fuel Harley racer Beau Layne was complaining of a hurt arm Friday as he was transported from Pacific Raceways to a local medical center following his accident at nearly 216 mph during qualifying for the NHRA Magic Dry Organic Absorbent Northwest Nationals.

Layne hit the opposite-lane guard wall and flew from his motorcycle immediately after registering a speed of 215.86 mph in his first qualifying attempt on the quarter-mile course just south of Seattle.

The Redding, California, rider carried the front wheel for about 1,000 feet, and when his front tire landed back on the pavement, his handlebars were turned awkwardly. He skated across the track from his left lane in front of fellow rider Tii Tharpe and hit the right guard wall hard, coming off his bike.

Although he stood up following the accident, NHRA officials later could say only that Layne was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Layne underwent surgery Friday evening to repair undisclosed damage to his arm.

After Layne and his motorcycle were separated, he tumbled down the track while the bike rocketed through the shutdown area and split two catch fences.

Layne, winner earlier this season at the Phoenix and Gainesville events, sits second in points behind leader Tharpe with just this event and the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals left on the Mickey Thompson Tires NHRA Top Fuel Harley schedule.
