Guys, there's a 96 Camaro for sale here locally. The guy claims it's an orginal SS. I'm going to swing by this weekend and take a look, but can anyone tell me how to positively i.d. one of these cars?

get the vin and email SLP. What are the details on the car? Is it around KC? If stock it should have 2 on the left exhaust, the hood, spoiler and wheels of course. I think the early ones has a dash plaque.

The complete as shipped info for these cars is available from GM Canada Vintage Services who have the Vins on file for most all '77 and up Camaros also other GM product, regardless of where built or sold new!.
RPO's and other as shipped Vin specific info is available for a minimal fee also a one day turn-around can be provided at extra cost if desired.. Say hi to George, he's a site member!. ~ Pete http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/shopping/parts/vintage

a simpler way is to take the VIN to your local Chevy dealer and have someone in service run the VIN . . . they are able to spit out the car are equipped from the factory and print out the sheets for you

Thanks guys. If the car is real, and I end up with it, I'll be sure to get with George and get the paper.

I haven't seen it up close, but it looks clean from a distance. It's modded, but that's not a big deal to me, as long as it's not a beat down p.o.s. I don't really need another mouth to feed, which is why I'm not breaking my leg to get the deal done, but I've had the itch for a 4th gen SS for awhile. I actually prefer the 98+ LS1 cars, but you hardly ever see LT1 SS cars, at least around here. |

If the door stickers are still intact there will be rpo codes for the SS and some other SS specific options. Also look for the SLP door stickers. I think the passenger door gets one with specific SS options. Look for the WU8 RPO code. I think there should also be an SLP sticker on the radiator cover as well. This was from my 96 SS hardtop car.

I think one of the rpo codes is actually called "hood for transport" or something like that. They must have put some plain hood on the cars to get it over to SLP where the SS hood was added. I had some 17x9 and 17x11 wheels painted white for my 96 SS. I put longtube headers on it and some other minimal mods like plug wires and coil. I never got it tuned before I sold it, but the guy who bought it ran a 13.4 in the 1/4 mile without a tune. Not bad for an automatic.
