Doing a deal on a car in Texas and need a little help please. What is the retail sales tax rate on a new car in Texas? Does someone from out of state that buys a car from a Texas dealer need to pay sales tax in Texas? Thanks in advance

Thanks Sam, it's a little more complicated than that, but your answer helps. Haven't worked out all of the details - just stuck on this tax issue a little. I'll post details later tonight if possible

if you are an out of state resident & shipping the car out of state you do not have to pay texas tax. some small fees may apply, state inspection & documentary fees (should be less than $100).... IF you register the car in texas, sales tax on vehicles is 6.25% of the purchase price, (less any credit for a trade in, if any)...

Well Mark, I'll add a couple of pennies here which may mean nothing based on the information posted by Patrick. I would imagine you would have to fill out some type of paperwork at the time of purchase to prove you are not a State resident to avoid the tax. If tax is indeed charged, you should be able to file a rebate of some type with the State. Good luck.

the dealer should have a 'resident from out of state form' or affidivat.... really an easy transaction to get done. most dealers will have the necessary forms... good luck.
