Default Steve Fossett's Plane Found

Pictures on our local newscast showed wreckage they just found in Inyo Natl. Forest in the Sierra Nevada Mts.today.Isn't that fairly close to you Charley?
The engine was ejected from the fuselage as if it hit the side of the mountain at high speed and he most likely died on impact, either due to a heart attack or a bird etc.
No remains have been found....yet.

"...No remains have been found....yet..."

--------------------------------------------------

Maybe never will considering how long animals have had over a year to take care of things?.

Funny how the headlines say searchers have found the wreckage yet the real story is an honest hiker simply stumbled upon Fossett's ID and cash..

No doubt an amazing man and it's good his family can finally put some real closure to things..

RIP Steve

Mammoth Lakes is about 90 miles south of where Fossett supposedly took off (near Minden Nevada).

From where Charley lives to Mammoth Lakes is around 250 miles...

It's very surprising that he was that far south...I remember reading that his flight plan had him going a more northerly route

They said they had flown over & over that crashsite mulitple times during the inital search, but never saw it because they were using high flying fixed wing airplanes.
Not until they knew specifically where to look, thanks to that hicker, and lower flying helicopters brought in today were they able to see it from the air.
Sad ending for a man that was recently declared legally dead & such a bold wrisk taking adventurer, this was basically a trip down the street for milk.
I agree about the remains, but ya never know if a bone or two will turn up..

Looks like nobody could survive that crash site.

The report above said there were "thunder heads" in that area the day of the crash. Single engine flying in mountainous terrain has it risks, but throw in some thunderstorms and the mix can become deadly.

There are potentially a multitude of reasons he may have crashed. It could have been mechanical failure, windshear, flying into a cloud that is obscuring a mountain or a health issue that incapacitated him.

They will be able to make some conclusions from what is left of the wreckage, but the sole answer for the crash may never be known.

It is a shame to see such an adventurer meet his demise in this manner.
