Default Ebay rant

OK, am I the only one that thinks Ebay is off base REQUIRING paypal only payment on most auctions? I have no problem paying $40 bucks to ebay if I sell a $1300 item, but then another $40 for the "privilege" of accepting paypal? Can you imagine if my bank tried to charge me $40 bucks to write a check?

Anyway, I listed two gold coins for sale. We will see how long before ebay yanks my auctions.

I believe they are doing that so uncle sam can monitor the transactions. Granted, Ebay/Paypal is also profiting along the way.

I can think of 1.5 billion reasons.......
eBay picks up PayPal for $1.5 billion

http://news.cnet.com/2100-1017-941964.html

So now they collect listing fees, selling fees and percentage of the transaction.

Oooh, Krugerrands --- evil. While I don't like the bite paypal takes any more than anyone else, I would word my add differently. If you make it a "pick up only" with cash as the only acceptable form of payment, ebay won't dump your auctions. Then if anyone wants to buy they will surely e-mail you asking about other forms of payment and possible shipping. Just my opinion, and you all know what's worth.....

I believe eBay's heyday is over. They will remain a viable format for many people selling smaller (i.e., lower $$$) items, but as you've discovered, selling pricier items costs too much money with their new rules. Then throw in the fact that it's almost impossible anymore to give negative feedback to a seller if you've been legitimately screwed, and it becomes even more difficult to have a warm fuzzy feeling about using them.

They also remain an effective advertising media for selling a vehicle, provided you put a high enough reserve on it so that it doesn't actually "sell" via the auction.

Put in your auction "All types of payment accepted". Usually doesn't get anyone booted.

Still not booted. Have a bid on each one. Really, ebay can be a great tool. I don't mind the listing fees (cheaper than the local paper) and the selling fees, I can deal with. Just don't like the double dip making me use their payment system. They were already making huge money.

I don't think the Uncle Sam thing is a factor at all. They can already track what you have sold without paypal.

I just wish someone would come up with a viable alternative.

Try that now and you may feel differently.

I have no problems with eBay. Sure, I don't like the way they expedite customer service issues, but that's par for the course when it comes to ANY company (especially on the phone). And, sure, I hate people who ruin the honesty code . . . but that's not eBay's fault.

Simply put, eBay is a great channel to find things and sell things, and I find their money grabs reasonable (at least for what they sell). If there is a need for a better mousetrap, someone will develop it.

"Simply put, eBay is a great channel to find things and sell things" I agree 100% with that part. No question about that. All the fees are reasonable. I only resent them requiring payment via paypal. I also don't understand the EXCEPTIONS to the rule listed below. What is the difference in me selling a $1200 vintage car part and a gold coin? Excpeptions to the paypal rule:
