Picked up a couple of M22 Muncies at Spring Carlisle, one of them is a CT P1A05C Metal Tag # 3968012WM. 661 Main Case, but 10 spline main drive gear and 28 spline output. The tag number seems do decode as M22 for L78 or LS6. Mabye a replacement tranmission for 1970 Chevelle? I have never seen a 661 case with the 10 spline type gear etc. All have been fine spline and large output.

John,
The 3968012WM code tag is for a 10 spline input and 27 spline output M22 for Corvette and Camaro use in 1970. Only the 70 454 Chevelle M22 transmission used the 3978766WO tagged 26 spline input and 32 spline output in 1970 in Chevrolet applications. All other 1970 Muncies were 10 spline input and 27 spline output and the 661 casting case was the majority casting used. Some early 70 Muncies used 660 castings. Chris |

So, my tag is for M22 in Corvette and Camaro. But the stamping on the case is P1? Wrong tag?

Not necessarily. Being that it is an over the counter transmission it can be date coded after the original intended usage.
