Default North Carolina DMV

How long does NC keep records or registered automobiles? Thanks in advance for your help.

I asked and rec'd info from the NC DMV in 2002 when researching the history on my 68 Z28. I had to sign a waiver stating I would not contact the previous owners when the car was registered in NC. That wasn't a problem seeing how I had already contacted owners 1 & 2. Back to your question...the NC DMV kept records from 68 until 02,which was 34 years when I asked. Good luck.

A fellow member posted how the n.c. DMV had all his records for his car , helping him get the documentation he needed showing his car was a Baldwin motion car. It's posted in the Motion section and titled (Information / history Of a 72 motion camaro in n.c. ) Maybe he can tell you about his experience & info you can receive.

In 2001 I was able to get a full NC ownership history on my old 69 Yenko Camaro with copies of all titles, applications for titles, and registration history. Fortunately, they even had a copy of the original VA title as the 2nd owner was from NC. That is how I found out it was sold new at Colonial Chev. Nothing was blacked out on the certified copies that I received.

NC was particularly cooperative as opposed to VA DMV. The privacy act still enables you to receive copies of this information for "research purposes" but each state seems to interpret that differently and most claim they don't have the info beyond 10 years, but often times they still have the info, but just don't want to be bothered to look for it.

Thank you all very much. We received our packet from N.C. and have since located the original owner. It will be fun telling the story at MCACN!
