Does the upper screen stay in place without the retainer ring? I've had 3 different versions of these but never 1 without some sort of retainer.

Yes it does stay. You have to pry it out to remove the screen and vise versa to install it. If it originally had a retainer I do not know as I do not have one. Like the listing states. What you see is what you get.
