SPOOF PHONE CALL

I just received a spoof/scam telephone call this evening on our home land line. The "fuzzy little foreigner" was telling me that there was a connectivity issue with our home computer and that he needed to diagnose it. So I played it all serious like and baited the jerk along and he thought his little scam was going to play out and then right when he asked me if I was in front of the computer with it on, I said "yes, oh no the computer won't turn on I think it's broke".

This guy got so angry when he knew his little scam would not then work out and realized I was playing him. He started yelling at me to stick it in my a$$. I was laughing so hard at him I nearly fell out of my chair!! [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/haha.gif[/img]

I had one a while back, too....and he didn't know what an Apple IIe was (I told him that is what my computer was)...LOL

There's a new scam you need to be careful of. When you answer the phone the caller ask can you hear me. When you answer &quot;yes&quot; they recorded your voice and use it to sign you up/make a purchase that is billed to your phone bill.

My wife had something similar while I was out of town. She was trying to get some on-line training done with work and was talking to tech support. They got into the computer and re-configured a few settings. She got her training done and before she knew it, the computer wasn't working right and a message popped up to call some 800 number. She did and was put in touch with some overseas guy who she let get into the computer as well. When the guy said it would be $600 to fix it, she balked and he lowered the price to $250, but when she realized the shake-down to get big money to &quot;fix&quot; the computer she hung up on the guy. That was the last time the computer worked. I had my tech brother try to re-boot it with no luck. I could not read any files of anything that was hooked up to the computer. I believe he left us with a little souvenir virus.

Anyhow, I have a bunch of pix that I still cannot get back to. Luckily most of the saved photos from that last 15 years or so have been backed up on external devices. I installed a new drive and regenerated the computer from back up discs.

What a PITA.

Woj, My dad has done that twice. Some how mom gets the computer off and it comes on and works ok. He was on the lap top last week and I heard him on his phone and he told the person he couldnt understand them. I figured out what he did and told him to hang up! Not sure what he does but may have to take the laptop away!!

With that new scam when they ask if you can hear them, I just always keep saying &quot;hello&quot; like an idiot sounding stupid and that usually frustrates them... Then I will make something up like they just caught me on the toilet and I am heavily constipated and I moan and make fart sounds... It's really juvenile but damn funny...
