I know for a fact that aftermarket CompPlus Hurst shifters (example) came with the clips shown on the left -- they did not use cotter pins. The clips can be a pain in the south-end to install and sometimes go a-flyin' -- that's why there are Hurst shifters out there with cotter pins ... and they rattle like an SOB ... TAZ

Original were cotter pin and wave washer. I'm not referring to after market Hurst.

Must be before the late 60s ... every aftermarket Hurst I have seen/installed had the clips ... TAZ

The factory shifters and trans levers also incorporated rubber grommets at the rod connections to minimize noise. Aftermarket shifters used bushings and clips.
