Default Need Price Opinions for 67 L78 Camaro

I am currently looking into buying a 67 RS/SS L78 coupe with 44,000 miles that another member was kind enough to bring to my attention. The car is a solid #2 and currently has wrong engine and trans, but has correct 12 bolt traction arm rear and has the pop. Tag decodes 760-Z (standard black interior), N-N (Madeira Maroon) 2L (M21 4-speed) 3L (RS) 4K (L78 396). POP matches up with vin and hidden vin, reflects manual brake car, L78, M21 and 4.10 Posi. Trim tag and pop are legit with all the correct things we look for.

Body is currently red (exceptional paint) and very solid, there are two small spots to fix in the trunk (minor patches). Interior is 95% original extremely clean and does not need work other than detailing. Current engine is a 1965 Vette 396 block and heads (unconfirmed at this point) with aftermarket intake, carb, headers and exhaust. RS equipment is all present and functional and it along with the rest of the engine compartment will require very little detail work to bring up to show quality. All chrome and stainless is either original or NOS in very good to show quality condition except bumpers which are aftermarket. Car will need door and trunk weatherstripping. Any body panels that have been replaced (restored in the mid 80's) have been replaced with NOS and are correctly done needing no work. Cars previous owners are known and several can be contacted.

I know pictures say a 1000 thousand words but I do not have them to post at this point. In the absence of them based on what I have described what would you feel is a fair price for the car?

Thanks,

Mike

I'm no expert on 67's, but I would think that somewhere between $35-$50,000 in that condition? The 67 Z was pretty rare, and like the others Z's are demanding a premium that some of the BB cars are not quite seeing yet.

Best guess,

Rich

Wow, 30-35 for an L78 car? How many (L78) did they make in 67? I know the Z's seem to be in the high double digit range.

They made 1138 I think, but that's really not the issue. The '67 L78 is not nearly as desirable to the general muscle car buyer as a Z-28 is. Top dollar for a restored, original drivetrain '67 L78 is about $75K versus $150K plus for a '67 Z. The killer for this car is that it's missing the engine and tranny, also it's the wrong color, has a spoiler, Mallory ignition etc. - far from completely correct. As a comparable, one of Jim at Heartbeat's customers sold a blue RS L78 that had better options, correct drivetrain, no aftermarket goodies and appeared to be a better quality resto for $48K this Summer.

Don't get me wrong, I love L78's and I've been trying to buy an L78 for the past few weeks, but just can't seem to get the deal done. However, the reality is that there just isn't a huge following for these cars.

The total L78 production for 67 was 1138. Of those it is estimated that 60 or less (no one knows for sure) were convertibles. Currently there are only around 75 known L78 coupes to survive and under 30 convertibles. Pricing for them seems to be all over the place which was the reason for the question.

There is no doubt that the 67 L78's are on a fast rise as more and more people realize how rare they are and other cars climb out of range at a faster rate. They are vastly under priced in my opinion when you consider there are around 1/3 the L78’s compared to the known Z’s, at the same time you have 400 more cars produced than the Z. The only things for the 67's that challenge the Z's though in price are the L78 ragtops which currently average low to mid 100's for a nice #2 driver NOM car and are not seen for sale in better condition often, none are known to have made it to auction that I am aware of. There are only five or six currently known that are numbers matching. This is excluding Yenko’s, etc. obviously. One that is fully documented, high options, numbers matching but in need of complete resto in #4 condition was offered $80k and turned down. Similarly was an NOM #3 with docs low option car with and an offer of $65k was rejected.

Thanks guys,

Mike
