Was wondering if the finish on the rear axle tubes would have been natural. More of a driveshaft look.(Raw steel) with the center section being cast and the flanges and spring perches being natural steel as well?
Corvette center sections were not painted black ..they were as cast. The build up pictures in the muscle car review of Estes 68 Z28 conv. show them painting the rear end a greyish color... was it originally phosphate or as cast?

If you are referring to 1st gen Camaro all of the vintage road tests I have with chassis photos indicate the entire housing was painted glossy black prior to assembly.
The HP Cars test of ZL1 #3 has an excellent axle photo.
