i have a 71 454 chevelle with a build date of 01C and the engine assembly date code t1216cpa.the car was orderd in november of 70 and was deliverd on 01/28/71.my question is about the date code on the trans,it reads P1T15C,im thinking the t is december but the number 1 before it designates 1971 i think.shouldnt it be a 0 instead of a 1?the cars vin is stamped on the case and looks authentic.anyone know if they used a different code for 1971 for the montths? Ron you're fine. "P1T15C" indicates a M-22 assembled on December 15, 1970. Remember, Muncies were date coded for the MODEL year, not the actual year they were built.
Nice car by the way! Ed

yes i can post a pic but it needs total restoration.i have located some nos front fenders and im looking for some nos quarterpanels.the car sat in the original owners backyard for years and was virtually rotting away.the back window started leaking and the trunk and under the back seat was should i say destroyed.it is beyond me how someone can walk by a car like this day after day and not even take measures to try to save it from the elements.so i have it and im going to try to save it but it will take lots of work to get it back.funny thing about the order form from november of 70 he wanted the m20 trans as stated on the order form but got the m22 instead, also he states that the cowl hood is original but not orderd on the form neither both are on the dealer invoice??? cant figure it out.there is also one other thing about the vin on the motor it reads 1b1132095 and the vin of the car is 13671b132095,why is there a extra 1 before the vin after the b? my 69 z doesnt read that way and i cant understand what the extra 1 might be for.thanks mr70 and i will take some pics of the car asap. Ron
Glad to hear you want to restore her.Like you, when others neglect,I see hope. The M22 was the required transmission on a 1971 454 Chevelle. The M20 would only come on the 350/270HP Chevelle back then, the M21 not at all. I don't know exactly what papers you have on this, but the Cowl Induction may have been added by the Dealership AFTER delivery of the car,by them. Thus he still paid for it,but not originally built with it. The extra Number 1 is unsual, but not unheard of.Humans stamped these,so it's possible, and has been found before.Baltimore Plant, more then most. |

Some of the dealer paperwork used "M20" for any 4 speed trans. It can be a cast iron Saginaw trans, M20, M21, or M22, and the paperwork may still have "M20".

thanks Joe,i think i read somewhere on the chevelle webpage that when a big block was orderd in 71 the m22 was mandatory i think, and that chevy would not put a m20 behind a 454 or a 402.good thing i guess, the person who orderd this car didnt want to spend the extra money for the m22 i guess but had no choice because the LS5 was on the option list.
